67/23 Councillors Report
A short report on the meeting of NPT PSB held at Aberavon Leisure Centre 27/6/23
This meeting was held in person to the approval of the delegates, and also since the meeting was in the Community Room of the new Leisure Centre at Port Talbot, it gave your representative a chance to take part in a fitness session prior to discussing a healthy weight strategy in NPT. Despite being quite well attended once again a number of the key members of the PSB were missing.
1.New arrangement for Public Health in the SBHB area. These were outlined and led to little discussion
2. Healthy Weight strategy – the strategy was outlined via power-point, and once again the WG has adopted a model-based strategy based on a 9 step approach to the fact that 60% of the population are now considered to be overweight. The connection between poverty and weight gain in the target group between 45 -64 years of age was an obvious one. However, the model failed to see the connection between the decline of heavy industry locally and the retention of a diet of highly calorific foods. It was also pointed out the fact that many of the population were already fit and that obesity among the young was becoming an increasing problem especially since the pandemic. The scheme highlighted a problem but offered few real solutions.
3. Progress of plan 2023 -28.
Each of the main partners, were invited to give a report though two were absent. The Environment group gave a detailed if simplistic view of nature in NPT and announced that from now on the name of the group would change from Environment to “Climate and Nature”, to make clear their main mission.
The next meeting of the full PSB would be on Tuesday 19th September, when the Freeport Scheme Status would be the main focus.

A proposal to install traffic calming measures in Commercial road was revisited, however this is something we have campaigned for over many years, without success. However we will continue in our efforts to have this much needed resource in our village.
